Pace, season and who it suits

Mingsha Shan dunes and Crescent Lake
Zhangye’s coloured rock layers
01 Day 1
Dunhuang
Arrive and settle into Dunhuang
Settle in, eat nearby and prepare water for the coming visits. Adjust to the dry air and changing temperatures, confirm Mogao reservations and meeting points, and leave the first evening free rather than chasing a desert sunset.
02 Day 2
Mogao Caves, Dunhuang
Give Mogao the time it deserves
Follow the official reservation and visitor arrangements, focusing on cave art and Silk Road stories. Respect photography and conservation rules inside the caves, then return to town for rest without another distant attraction.
03 Day 3
Mingsha Shan and Crescent Lake
See the dunes and lake in cooler hours
Start slowly and choose a suitable visit time according to heat and wind. View the dunes and Crescent Lake from manageable paths, keeping camel rides and climbs optional and allowing seated breaks before returning to town.
04 Day 4
Dunhuang to Zhangye
Transfer along the Hexi Corridor to Zhangye
Use the day for the Dunhuang-to-Zhangye transfer, confirming rail or road arrangements and both local connections. Eat and rest on arrival, leaving the coloured hills until tomorrow instead of relying on a tightly timed sunset.
05 Day 5
Zhangye Danxia
Take time with the coloured hills and viewpoints
Choose viewpoints along the open visitor route and shuttle system, observing rock colours from different angles. Limit steps to a comfortable amount, take breaks and stay on marked paths; vivid sunset colours depend on the weather.
06 Day 6
Zhangye
Leave calmly without another remote excursion
Have breakfast or a short city walk according to departure time, then continue to the station or airport. Allow luggage and weather buffers, reserving distant excursions such as Mati Temple for an additional day.
