Pace, season and who it suits
Pace One base below the mountain, one stair-heavy day and gentler village and transfer days.
Season Spring and autumn are useful choices; mist affects visibility and winter ice calls for more conservative route choices.
Who it suits Travellers who enjoy mountain paths as well as historic architecture and village life.
Huangshan’s pines, rock formations and peaks
Hongcun’s waterways and whitewashed houses
A gentle walk through Tunxi
01 Day 1
Tunxi
Arrive and explore a little of old Tunxi
Check in after arriving in Huangshan city, then explore a short stretch of old Tunxi. After dinner, confirm mountain weather and your departure point rather than making an overnight dash for sunrise.
02 Day 2
Huangshan
Choose a realistic Huangshan route
Make Huangshan the only main visit today, combining cableways and walking according to operation. Steps remain even with a cableway; choose a manageable pine-and-rock route, pause for lunch and allow a comfortable descent.
03 Day 3
Hongcun
Hongcun’s water and courtyards
Focus on Hongcun rather than collecting several villages. Follow its waterways, lanes and open courtyards, take a proper lunch break and ask before photographing residents, then return to your accommodation at an easy pace.
04 Day 4
Huangshan
Breakfast and onward travel
After breakfast, head to the correct airport or station. Huangshan city, the mountain entrance and Huangshan North station are separate places, so calculate transfers independently and keep your departure buffer even if weather changes.

- Cableways do not remove the walking
- Check cableways, trails and weather and choose a route that matches the group’s physical ability.
- Think through your hotel location
- Tunxi and mountain-base stays have different transfer needs; choose the base before arranging transport.
- Give villages unbroken time
- Choose Hongcun or Xidi for a fuller visit; add time if you want both rather than cutting mountain-day rest.
